Five piece live hip-hop band Underling have just released a new EP entitled 'Underpants' and it's an amazing fusion of jazz, funk, hip-hop and even bhangra music.
Using purley electronic and sequenced instruments, rather than the
live instuments they are known for, this is an excellent indication
of how talented these guys are.
'Looking Around' kicks off the EP with a bhangra vibe and then smacks you with a headbanging drum beat. This is a fantastic introduction to the EP and helps showcase the lyrics and skills of Underling emcee Aron.
'Trod Treads' is a completly different track to the first as it starts with a basic beat adding more instruments as it goes along. The final ensemble is a catchy, fun and enjoyable track that I would imagine would be great to see live.
The EP continues with 'Tit 4 Tat' and is another fine example of the thoughtful production that has gone into making this record. A laid back tune that, when listening to on my iPod on the crowded train, helped me forget the sweaty armpit of the guy standing next to me, which I'll take time to thank the band for now.
The last two tracks 'Seasons', for me the best on the EP, and '100%'
are more proof of how good 'Underpants' is.
If you like your hip-hop funky with a live band then Underling are not to be missed.
A live release will be available sometime in 2007 and I will certainly be in line to buy a copy.
