Soundhaus, usually a dance/rave venue, started it's first hip-hop night this month (Dec '06) in Glasgow which, in this city, is a hard thing to find these days.
The venue was obviously a warehouse at one point but has been converted into two rooms, a smaller room playing reggae and a larger room that hosted the gig.
Up first was a group of four young lads called 4D whose members
include Shah, Suki and Taffy. The fourth, who I didn't catch his
name, does not even appear on their website so maybe he is a new
member?
The boys done well and, although not my type of hip-hop, had a nice flow and positive sound about them with most songs about racism and drugs in and around the area where they live.
Down from Dundee West was up next and this was the first time I have managed to catch his live set. Performing tracks like 'Throwaways' West produced a confident set which I enjoyed and when his 'Breakthrough' EP drops I'll certinatly be grabbing myself a copy.
Spee 69, hype man for Project Mayhem, was next in line with his new group Awsome Wellz. MC Marshall Art, from Partian Shot, was there as Spee's Hype man. As with Project Mayhem the guys did not disappoint and were excellent from the start. Both MCs delivered solid performances and when Boomstick, one third of Project Mayhem, took to the stage for a couple of tracks the crowd were treated to some excellent skills. The beats were also top notch and I hope it will not be long before these guys drop a long player.
Powercut Productions was also in the building with a solid performance from Steg G & The Freestyle Master ft. Cad who produced tracks from their 'Natural Selection' LP and a couple of new tracks from the upcoming 'Wayward Son' EP. Freestyle Master displayed some good flows which is typical of him and Cad, although his mic kept cutting out, was also good from what I could hear.
The Excellent Damaged Goodz was up next alongside Big Div of Kriminal Recordz and both displayed the type of performance which they are known for. Beejay is great at entertaining the crowd with his crazy dance moves, on stage antics and lyrical content.
DJ Zeeny was on form spinning the beats for both MCs. I got the chance to have a good talk with him throughout the gig and he is a top bloke.
It was also pointed out to me that the Powercut crew left and did not stay for Damaged Goodz performance. It was a shame they missed a good performace from Damaged Goodz but it was said that they had an appointment at 7am so it was completely understandable.
I would give this night another star but the one disappointing thing about the night was the Technical aspects of it. The sound was a little too loud in places and the mics kept cutting out. This was not helped by the soundman disappearing for a couple of hours during the gig. On speaking with the promoter, Grant, I know these will be sorted out next time which is obviously good as this could have the potential to be one of the top hip-hop nights in Glasgow on which I said earlier, Glasgow sorely needs more of.
