Steg G and The Freestyle Master have been making quite an impact in Scotland and the rest of the UK having just appeared on the front cover of the Glasgow Herald's supplement 'The Guide'. This was on the back of 'Natural Selection' the album released on their own label Powercut Productions.
The album boasts collaborations with homegrown acts such as Dark Rumors, Verse One and West as well as UK artists as the mighty Rodney P.
The 16 track album (or 19 track on the limited edition digi pack) is more proof of Scottish hip-hop coming of age. From Steg G's beats to Freestyle Master's lyrics, this is a solid production from start to finish.
After the intro track 'Mirrors' we are treated to 'I Know You Wanna' which is surly going to be a club banger north and south of the border with it's Big 'Timpani' drum beat , Kanye West style violins and playful lyrics like 'More dope tracks than Pete Docherty's arms'. This is followed by the equally excellent 'Anti Social Behaviour', one of the highlights on the album.
Griddy Grimes and Cyrus pop up on 'My City Life', the fourth on the album, a track about, as the title suggests, city life within Glasgow and Brooklyn, home town of Glasgow born Griddy Grimes.
The album continues it's high standards up to and including 'Never Coming Back'. This upbeat track featuring Kim Wilson has an infectious funky beat that puts a smile on your face while listening to the lyrics about how he realises his girlfriend is the 'Devil in Disguise'.
If this album has one failing it's with the track 'Paperchase' but this is purely a selfish reason as it uses a sample from 'It's a Rich Man's World' and I have a hatred of Abba. Blame my parents on that one. This is however a bonus track and only available on the limited edition.
On the whole, this is a solidly produced album that no fan, Scottish or otherwise, should be without.
