Grandmaster Flash - Classic Grand - 29.11.06
Grandmaster Flash - Classic Grand - 29.11.06

Classic Grand in Glasgow was the venue for the Grandmaster Flash gig which is situated in the old Cannon Grand 'Porn' cinema but has now transformed into an impressive venue and will no doubt become an important part of Glasgow's nightclub scene.

The gig kicked off a little late with Inverness duo Lost Property who performed well considering they did not get a sound check. Verse One and Krafty produced tracks from both the 'Beat Thief ' album and the upcoming charity '8 Ball mixtape volume 2' CD. At a few points Verse forgot his lines but saved himself by freestyling well. They succeeded in warming up the crowd and introduced the next act, Bigg Taj.

As usual the 'Bigg' man himself delivered and drove the crowd crazy with his amazing vocal talent. I looked around the crowd and the look in their faces was that of sheer amazement in what they were witnessing.

Coreskills hosts I.Q. were next backed with a live band made up of members of Quest's other group dBass. The crowd really got in to these guy's eclectic sound including a fiddle player which all worked well together. Also on vocals with Immense & Quest was the amazing Tasha who stunned the crowd with her incredible vocals. This petite singer comes across a little shy when on stage but once she starts singing seems more at ease and enjoys herself. Tasha and I.Q. had some problems with the volume on their mics and I found them a little hard to hear over the band, but once sorted everything fell into place.

After a small break Grandmaster Flash took to the stage and the crowd went crazy. Mixing a lot of classic hip-hop tunes old and new he consistently got the crowd involved and kept them interested. I have to say though I was a little disappointed with some of the skills he showed but it was still good to witness a 'legend' at work. Some members of the crowd even started to breakdance on the main floor providing some great entertainment.

One thing I will say is that my friend Mac managed to talk with Flash during his half time break and said thanks for a good show so far. Flash said thanks and put out his hand as did Mac saying "are you performing with DJ Shadow later on then?" On hearing this Flash took his hand away and brushed Mac off. Flash is obviously a man who is obsessed with his own legendary status!

Flash was on for a couple of hours with DJ Bunty following after. I have to say, I was more impressed with Bunty's skills than the Grandmaster himself. His mixing and scratching was a joy to watch.

So did DJ Shadow show? No. On speaking to a couple of the acts, and a few who worked in the club, it was said he was never on the bill and it was only a marketing ploy to sell tickets. This to me is shocking and I do not agree with it. More so that bringdaruckus.com was a sponsor.

While on this tip, some of the DJs on the flyer were also not playing. Again, told from reliable sources, some offered money so they could have their name on the same flyer as Grandmaster Flash. For the DJs concerned, and we all know who you are, I think this is pretty poor. I would hope this wasn't the case and If any one wants to set the record straight please do so, I'll post your views on the site.

To be honest, I'm glad they did not play as it would have been a case of 'too many DJs'. All in all it was a great night that had a sold out venue witness some good homegrown talent.

I look forward to Legends part 2.
