What is bringdaruckus.com?

Bringdaruckus.com (BDR) was the brainchild of Chris Torres who was shocked at the lack of attention Scottish hip-hop gets within the music industry and felt it was time for a change. Chris said, "I was looking to find more information on Scottish hip-hop but found it difficult to locate information on new releases, gigs and artists. Apart from the Scottish hip-hop forum there was not much else. This is when I thought about starting up a website that could remedy this problem. The aim was to build an online community for hip-hop in Scotland. A place where homegrown acts can showcase their talent and fans can get the latest gig information in Scotland." On April 1st 2006, bringdaruckus.com was born.

Within a year BDR became the only dedicated professional face of Scottish hip-hop gaining respect from artists and fans alike receiving approximately 500,000 hits a month and rising! The site went on to sponsor Grandmaster Flash which, due to this site, had a strong Scottish lineup in support. Sponsorship of Wanted Records '8 Ball Mixtape Volume 2' was next with all proceeds going to the National Autistic Society. The CD was also sponsored by Sagem. Technically not a hip-hop gig, BDR sponsored Goldie seeing it as good promotion of the site.

The fruit of all Chris' hard work came in February of 2007 when two things happened. First, along with Urbanize, two gigs were organised, one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh, that showcased Scottish and Irish hip-hop with both being filmed for a documentary. These gigs were to be called The Celtic Connection. Featuring artists Respek BA, Project 77, Marrik Layden Deft, Loki, Jee4ce, Surface EMP, DHT, Verse One, The Remedies, DJ Fly T, Mavrick Sabre, Bigg Taj, Correkt Minds and DJ G, the gigs were considered an amazing display of talent from both countries and even picked up a handful of accolades within the press. The documentary will be released on DVD alongside a CD featuring new tracks from the artists at the gigs, with a few surprises thrown in, by the end of 2007 start of 2008. Both BDR and Urbanize hopes The Celtic Connection will return next year with a gig in Dublin.

The second thing to happen was Chris was given the hip-hop column in the Glasgow and Edinburgh event guide The Skinny magazine which has a distribution of around 24,000. Chris sees this as another step forward in his mission to promote Scottish hip-hop to the fullest.

With all this in mind, the most remarkable thing is Chris makes no money from bringdaruckus.com. Every penny he has made has gone back into maintaining the website and promotion of Scottish hip-hop through gigs and events.

Expect more events and surprises in 2007/2008! The surprise came when due to work and family related commitments Chris had to consider closing down BRD after all his hard work, dedication and achievements. The Urban Shop actually contacted Chris about some sponsorship and support they had offered and that's when they heard the news Glyn @ TheUrbanShop takes up the story "We were shocked when we heard what Chris was planning but totally understood his dilemma and so after a brief conversation we offered to take over the upkeep of BDR. It was a natural progression for us we have very close connection with hip-hop in the Midlands and have just completed our second mixtape with UKRunnings. Added to that is the fact that we have lots of customers in Scotland and used to go up snowboarding some years back so we saw BDR as payback. We hope that we get the support that Chris had and keep this thing moving for Scottish hip-hop."
